Revolutionary Treatment for Herniated Disc

What is Herniated Disc?

The vertebrae or bones that form the spine are cushioned by discs between each vertebra. The round discs are like small pillows with a tough outer layer called annulus that surrounds the nucleus. The discs act as shock absorbers for the spinal bones. When the outer part gets tears or splits, the gel can leak out i.e. the disc will become herniated or ruptured. These Tears or fractures may occur in your spine caused by wrong movements or incorrect posture of the spine. Most herniated disks occur in the lower back, although they can also occur in the neck. Cervical disc herniation compresses nerves in your neck and is a common cause of neck and upper body pain.

What causes a Herniated Disc?

It can difficult to figure out exactly the cause of a herniated cervical disk. It can develop slowly without a clear cause.

  • Weak back and neck muscles and inactive lifestyle
  • Wear and tear due to age as the amount of water and hence flexibility in the discs decrease
  • Genetics – herniated disks can run in families
  • Smoking
  • Sudden, jarring movement
  • Sudden strain when lifting a heavy object or turning or twisting upper body too quickly

Signs and Symptoms

A herniated disk can occur in any part of the spine. Depending on where the herniated disk is, it can affect an arm or leg. Many people have no symptoms from a herniated disk. Surgery is usually not necessary to relieve the problem. If the ruptured disk is pressing on a nerve root the symptoms can include:

  • Numbness or tingling in a leg, shoulder or arm that may go down to your fingers
  • Weakness in a hand, arm, or leg
  • Signs and symptoms depend on where the disk is situated and usually affect one side of the body.
